Invitation to How it's done
2022
This composition offers an immersive and free framework for the audience. The audience enters several rooms that they can explore at their leisure throughout the 45-minute composition interpreted by 8 musicians. The musicians are positioned in space at different locations and synchronized with each other by the Polytempo software, allowing them to play together while being physically separated. Each spectator is also given a bone conduction headset (leaving the ear open), allowing them to experience augmented reality: the electronic sounds broadcast through the headset overlay with the instruments.
Every concert is a subjective experience for each member of the audience, but the particularity of this composition lies in the fact that the audience is required to make choices regarding which instruments its members will hear prominently depending on their position in space. This requirement for choice individualizes the concert experience. The synchronization of all musicians despite the great distance separating them from one room to another creates a captivating sensation of continuity and wholeness in space.
The musical continuity and coherence are further enhanced by the sounds emitted through bone conduction headsets evenly throughout the space. The concert setup used here, combining cutting-edge technologies (bone conduction headset, Polytempo software), offers a completely unprecedented experience for the audience of contemporary music, for which composers must find innovative musical strategies.
